Roman Britain: Celtic Sources

The Life and Death of a Druid Prince by Anne Ross and Don Robins, 1989. The mystery of Lindow Man. Read's like a detective novel and follows the step by step process of "identifying" Lindow Man. Offers insight into the mind of the Celtic peoples at the time of the Roman conquest. Not a gaming reference so much, but still very inspirational and informative. One of my favorite Books.

Reconstructing the Past by Alan Sorrell, 1981. Outstanding source of birdseye drawings for modeling British fortifications Mesolithic era to 1700's, but Celtic and Roman Britain drawings were especially intriging. Great for modeling.

Osprey MAA no. 158 Rome's Enemies 2: Gallic and British Celts by Peter Wilcox. Good introduction and general history: Angus McBride's color plates are very inspirational for figure painters.

The World of the Celts by Simon James, 1993. Though I have much more scholarly books on the subject, this is my favorite book about the Celts. It covers just about every aspect of Celtic life, is very entertainingly written, is loaded with color and b&w photos, and tons of outstanding illustrations. Many of the illustrations are detail isometric or oblique reconstructions of equipment or sites, some are exploded views. I find it to be a fantastic source n information and inspiration for the game table. What it is not, is a military history of the Celtic peoples, nor is it a painting guide, though the text addresses clothing fairly well.

Roman Britain: Roman Sources

Hadrian's Wall by Stephen Johnson, 1989. Interesting discussion about the wall with many drawings and b&w photos, and a few color photos and artist's reconstructions.

Hadrian's Wall in the Days of the Roman's by Ron Embleton and Frank Graham, 1984. Loaded with both b&w and color illustrations depicting life on and around the wall. Much other interesting information including terms, placement of units and general history of the wall.

Reconstructing the Past by Alan Sorrell, 1981. Spectacular source of birdseye drawings for modeling British fortifications Mesolithic era to 1700's, but Roman Britain drawings were especially intriging. Great for modeling.

Rome Against Caratacus by Graham Webster, 1981. Good history heavily based on archeology with b&w illustrations throughout and a small b&w photo section.

Osprey MAA no.46, The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan by Michael Simkins. Very informative with good color plates by Ron Embleton. A real help in figure painting.

Roman Britain by Martin Millett, 1995. Another of the English trust books, informative text, b&w photos, and a few really good artists reconstructions. For me, mostly an aid an inspiration for model building.

Roman Forts in Britain by Paul Bidwell, 1997. This is an English Heritage book loaded with maps of forts and several artists reconstructions of Roman buildings and portions of forts. Very helpful if modeling Roman structures.

The Roman Invasion of Britain by Graham Webster, 1980. Very informative history with many b&w illustrations and small b&w photo section.

The Roman Legions Recreated in Colour Photographs by Daniel Peterson, 1992. Europa Militaria Special No.2, it is loaded with color photos of Roman reenactment groups. An outstanding source for figure painters and as inspiration for gaming.

The Roman War Machine by John Peddie, 1997. Quite simply, the book tells how it worked. I found it very helpful. Some b&w photos and illustrations.

Training the Roman Cavalry by Ann Hyland, 1993. A real eye opener for me, lots of detail from history and recreation. Some b&w photos and illustrations.
