Books

A note regarding books about the Arab-Israeli conflicts: Many texts offer helpful information for the gamer, but most are lacking some sort of required details to be a complete guide in putting together scenarios. Typically, I find that it might take two or three books to figure out what equipment served in which battles, and then a couple other texts will be required to create actual (or reasonably representative) topography of the battlefield. Details are still often left hanging, forcing the gamer to fill in the blanks with his best guess.

The Arab-Israeli Wars by Chaim Herzog, 1984. Probably the best history of the wars that I have seen. Details for the '56 war are especially useful in scenario development, often citing numbers of specific vehicle types; less detail is offered for the '67 and '73 wars.

Osprey Vanguard no. 19, Armour of the Middle East wars 1948-1978 by Steven J. Zaloga,1981. Good overview of armor with detail of some battles, but no maps. Color plates are very helpful for painting minis.

Osprey Vanguard no.22 The Centurion Tank by Simon Dunstan, 1981. Good history of the tank in service and helpful painting guide.

Fighters Over Israel by Lon Nordeen, 1990. A very interesting history of the airwars over the Mid East. Details of missions are very helpful, though you will seldom know what units are involved in the more recent conflicts.

From Golan to Sinai: The Arab-Israeli Wars 1956-1973 by Clash of Arms Games. This is a scenario module for the rules system Clash of Armor. Six scenarios are included along with vehicle stats for the rules system. It is useful, but accuracy is questionable at times. Maps are sometimes representative of the battlefield, but not truly accurate depictions. Still, it is helpful in putting together scenarios.

Israeli Defence Forces The Six Day War 5-6-67 to 10-6-67, Ed. by Col. Mordechai Bar-On, 1968. Very good text discussing the battles with equally good b&w photos. the maps are not truly accurate topo maps, but offer a good representation of the general topography. I find it to be one of the more helpful books in putting together scenarios.

Israeli Tanks and Combat Vehicles by Steven J. Zaloga, 1983. A collection of b&w photos depicting Israeli armor over the years.

Key to the Sinai: The Battles for Abu Ageila in the 1956 and 1967 Arab Israeli Wars by Dr, George W. Gawrych. Research Survey No. 7 of the Combat Studies Institute. This is the best book I've seen on any battle from any of the wars. There is extensive detail of the battle, units, deployment, and reasonable topo maps. Scenarios can easily be generated from this book.

Lightning Out of Israel by the Associated Press, 1967. A series of firsthand accounts offering soldiers viewpoints from the various nations involved. Many good b&w photos.

On the Banks of the Suez by Avraham (Bren) Aden, 1980. A very interesting discussion of the Sinai front of the 1973 war. Many useful details regarding units and places are given, though maps are very general.

Swift Sword by S.L.A. Marshall, 1967. A very good, concise history of the war offering some detail useful in putting together scenarios. Many good color and b&w photos.

Tank Battles of the Mid-East Wars (1) The Wars of 1948-1973 by Steven J. Zaloga, 1996. Very good overview of the wars with many b&w photos and color plates. Text detail types of vehicles used and plates serve as a good painting guide.

The War of Atonement by Chaim Herzog, 1998. A very good history of the '73 war, but not quite enough info to build scenarios from. Still, one of the better books on the subject.
